LOS ANGELES (AFP) – US actor James Avery, most
famous as Uncle Phil in hit 1990s sitcom “The
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” died on New Year’s Eve
aged 68, his publicist said Wednesday.
With a deep baritone voice, Avery regularly played
judges, professors or doctors in TV shows in the
1980s and 90s, as well as extensive voice work,
including on animated projects.
His first big-screen role was an uncredited part in
1980s classic “The Blues Brothers,” and he enjoyed
a prolific TV and movie career stretching over three
decades.
But the role most people will remember him for is
as Philip Banks on the 1990s NBC series, who
played a role model to the young Will Smith’s
character, a fictionalized rapper version of himself.
“I’m deeply saddened to say James Avery has
passed away,” his “Fresh Prince” co-star Alfonso
Ribeiro tweeted. “He was a second father to me. I
will miss him greatly.”
Born James LaRue Avery in Virginia and raised in
New Jersey, he had worked until September,
shooting the film “Wish I Was Here” directed by
Zach Braff, which will premiere at the Sundance
Film Festival this month.
Avery died late Tuesday in hospital in Glendale,
outside Los Angeles, “due to complications from
open heart surgery,” his publicist Cynthia Snyder
told AFP in an email.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara
Avery, his mother Florence Avery, and his stepson
Kevin Waters. Plans are being made for a memorial
service, the spokeswoman said.

WHY 'Nollywood' Has to be Renamed to 'Naiwood'
The
controversies
that trailed
Nollywood’s
20-year-
anniversary
are still
not over.
Some of
the stakeholders have continued to question the
name ‘Nollywood’ and the 20 years tag put as the
life span of the now nose-diving industry.
The release of after a movie, Living In Bondage, on
VHS, 20 years ago has changed the face of the
Nigeria movie industry and gave it a big bang.
Many veterans, especially those in the Yoruba
genre, have rejected the claim that the industry is
only 20 years old when the likes of Hubert Ogunde,
Ade Love, Baba Sala and others had been in the
industry as far back in the 50s.
In this regard, a group of progressive members of
the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts
Practitioners (ANTP), led by Yomi Fabiyi, is seeking
renaming of the industry to ‘Naiwood’.
The group claims that this name will truly represent
all the stakeholders, and will be devoid of tribal
dichotomy, which the group said the present
‘Nollywood’ encourages and represents.
In his message to Nigeriafilms, Yomi said:
“If the acronym for their movie industry means they
started two decades ago, perhaps there was no one
producing (movies) amongst them in the last 21
years.
“We inherited film making, we had legendary
filmmakers in Nigeria before then. [We] can't fold
our arms and watch then sweep under the carpet
[the effort of our veterans] with an acronym
(Nollywood).
“That acronym NOLLYWOOD is not acceptable by
us, if it represents 20 years. We've films shot in
Nigeria 60, 50 and 40 years ago on celluloid (the
biggest filming standard in the world before digital
celluloid) irrespective of the quantity then.
“Home video is just another means of distributing
films. In an unjust society where inequality,
tribalism, sentiment is the order of the day,
SILENCE IS A SIN.
“We wish to set the record straight, film making
started in Nigeria 70 years ago.
“NAIJA (Nigeria) is a film, football and oil country.
Nigerian movie industry - NAIWOOD, is the right
name for the right naija film history.
“We the Progressives in ANTP of the movie
industry, irrespective of tribe and religion, wish to
be referred with that acronym henceforth, and we
mean every word of it.
Signed YOMI FABIYI.”

Last Batch Of 131 Deportees Arrive From Saudi Arabia
The last
batch of
Nigerians
being
repatriated
from
Saudi
Arabia
yesterday
arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport,
Abuja..
The Director, Consular and Immigration Service in
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Abdulazeez Dan-
Kano, told newsmen that the remaining 131
deportees out of 518 were transported home.
According to Dan-Kano, 51 of the deportees are
from Kano State, while 17 are from Borno, with 16
from Katsina State, and 11 from Yobe.
He said nine of the deportees were from Jigawa, six
from Plateau, while Kaduna and Bauchi states had
five and four deportees respectively.
The director said Edo had three deportees, while
Nasarawa had two, with one deportee each from
Kebbi, Ogun, Niger and Adamawa states.
Dan-Kano said all the 518 deportees arrived in the
country in six batches between December 25 and
December 31.
He appealed to Nigerians still hiding in slums in
Saudi Arabia to embrace the benevolence of the
Federal Government and return home to avoid the
wrath of the Saudi authorities.
Dan-Kano said the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi
Arabia had since begun sensitisation campaign on
the need for proper documentation of Nigerians who
were legally resident in the country.
He said that most of the deportees were Nigerians
who travelled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, but stayed
back at the end of the exercise in search of
“greener pastures.”
The director said the affected Nigerians had
requested government’s assistance to facilitate
their return home. [Vanguard]

Banks close early in Ilorin over fear of robbery attacks
Banks close early in Ilorin over fear of
robbery attacks
on january 01, 2014 at 10:07 am in news
ILORIN — Bank customers in Ilorin, the Kwara
capital, have been going through hassles to transact
businesses as the local branches now close at 2.00
pm over fear of attack by robbers.
According to reports, the development was caused
by a December 19 incident in Offa during which an
estimated 30 robbers stormed some banks killing a
number of people.
The robbers also raided a divisional police station in
the town during the attack which occurred at about
6.00pm.
Consequently, banks in Ilorin close as early as 2.00
pm instead of the usual 4.00 pm, forcing scores of
customers to resort to the use of the Automated
Teller Machines, ATMs.
This has led to long queues at the ATMs as
customers besiege the cash dispensing machines
for transactions.
A member of staff of one the banks, who pleaded
anonymity, confirmed that the banks’ refusal to
open till the usual 4.00 pm was caused by fears of
impending attack.
Some of the customers said the development was
unfortunate.
They called on the Nigeria Police and other security
agencies to rise to the occasion and secure lives
and property.
They urged government at all levels to create jobs
and initiate people-oriented programmes to cater
for the teeming unemployed youths.
The Kwara Police Commissioner, Mr Agboola
Oshodi-Glover, said yesterday that the police were
on top of the situation.
He said the command had deployed its officers and
men to the nooks and crannies of the state to
reduce crime rate to the barest minimum.
He urged the people to go about their businesses
without any fear and cooperate with the police.
