Four French hostages kidnapped in Niger freed
NIAMEY/PARIS (Reuters) - Four French hostages kidnapped in Niger by al Qaeda's north African wing have been released following secret talks with officials from the West African country, ending three years in captivity.
Pierre Legrand, Daniel Larribe, Thierry Dol and Marc Feret were kidnapped by AQIM in September 2010 while working for French nuclear group Areva and a subsidiary of construction group Vinci in Arlit in Niger.
Any conditions of the release were not immediately clear, but, speaking to French television on Tuesday on his arrival in Niamey to collect the men and take them home, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius denied the government had paid a ransom.
A regional official close to the negotiations said Mohamed Akotey, a former Nigerien minister, who had been chairman of the board of Imouraren, a new mine Areva is building in northern Niger, had led the negotiations for the past year.
Regional weekly magazine Jeune Afrique citing senior Niger sources said Atokey and the head of Niger' s intelligence services had traveled by helicopter on Tuesday to northern Mali after receiving a green light from the hostage takers.
"(It has been) three years of suffering for these citizens who have been held by jailers without scruples and three years of suffering for the families who have lived hell and today are relieved," French President Francois Hollande told a specially convened news conference during a visit to Slovakia.
Visibly tired, dressed in green Tuareg robes and a blue turban, and with a long beard, a smiling Thierry Dol said the three years in captivity had been extremely difficult.
"It's an ordeal of a lifetime," he told reporters at Niamey airport.
Hollande thanked Niger President Mohamadou Issoufou, who he said had obtained the release of the hostages.
"They were in northern Mali and we succeeded in bringing them back to Niger," Issoufou said.
GOOD HEALTH
Paris launched air strikes and sent hundreds of soldiers into Niger' s neighbor Mali at the start of the year to drive back al Qaeda-linked rebels it said could turn the West African country into a base for international attacks.
The insurgents have threatened to hit French targets across the Sahel region in revenge. AQIM said in March they had beheaded one hostage they held and warned that they could kill the others. His body was found in July.
The men's release gave Hollande a boost just a day after a poll showed he had become the most unpopular French president on record, with the Socialist leader hit by anger over tax hikes, unemployment and rows over the government's immigration policy.
The men are due to travel back to Paris early on Wednesday.
"The president told us they are in good health," Rene Robert, grandfather of Legrand, said on i-tele. "I never doubted Pierre could hold on but we didn't know how long things would last, and it is true that at some point he could have worn out."
There was no news about the fate of three other men - a Swede, Dutch and South African - who were also held by AQIM. Two other French nationals are also still being held after being taken by armed groups in Mali.
Hollande has said Paris has ended a policy of paying ransoms for hostages, but suspicion that it still does despite official denials has been a source of tension with the United States.
France brushed off an allegation by a former U.S. diplomat that it paid a $17 million ransom in vain for the release of the three hostages abducted in 2010 from Niger.
But Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram was paid an equivalent of around $3.15 million by French and Cameroonian negotiators before freeing seven French hostages in April, a confidential Nigerian government report seen by Reuters showed.
Hollande told the family of the Sahel hostages in January that the new policy also meant that he had told companies and insurance firms to not pay ransoms.
Five other French nationals are held overseas - one in Nigeria and four in Syria.

Do they pray for Dangote?
Do they pray for Dangote?

By Oboh Agbonkhese
THE varieties of demons that exist in Nigeria are an interesting mix against which we daily do battle. There are malaria-causing, diarrhoea-inflicting and headache-distributing demons. And, believe it or not, some demons are specialists in polio apportionment. Of course, enemies are always around to direct the demons to the ‘right’ persons. For the doubting Thomas, a night in my area will do the same job those holes in Jesus’ palms and side did. On certain days of the week, ears are assaulted by verbal wars against demons of unbelievable kinds and the enemies that direct them. Definitely, on Fridays, kiss sleep farewell.
You still do not get me? The five churches in my area have decided that the weapons of their warfare are carnal. So public address systems connected to creaky amplifiers are on maximum volume. Add the noise from power generating sets to the mix and you have to pity these demons, because how they manage to retain their identities in the din and confusion is a feat. They are constantly subjected to ‘kill,’ ‘die,’ ‘fire,’ and ‘redirect.’
Some nights, about two or three of the churches, whether by accident or design, go into demon battles simultaneously. That is when I picture all the demons dying off from constant collision with one another, considering the barrage of missiles from competing voices. But since the vigils still hold on schedule, the demons must be surviving on the principle of fission: hit split-up, hit split-up. No end. So the battles continue.
Meanwhile, the perceived enemy has gone to hustle for the day after a quiet one-on-one with God. But the warriors must rest and prepare for another showdown or, when they go to work, perform below capacity. Aliko Dangote? I have not digressed at all.
*Alhaji Aliko Dangote
To say Dangote is a wonderful and adventurous businessman, is stating the obvious. But no, he has not diversified into demon packaging and distribution. Just that right now, he is the only reason all the churches in my area should go into over-drive in battling demons. I will not mind one bit. This time, I will gladly supply the name of the offending demon: electricity-sabotaging demon!
If the power project he is spearheading ‘makes sense,’ a revolution would have started. Ten kobo will begin to buy lollypop again and my barber, who took another look at my head and began to charge N300 will repent. N300! In Egan! Where is that? Exactly the point. Even the state government does not know. Dangote must succeed. The new owners of privatised PHCN? I do not trust them. Not yet.
But I doubt if these warriors remember Dangote in their prayers. They are too busy. At the camps that infest the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, church workers sweep up used condoms the mornings after vigils. Some fight anti-marriage demons, while others move around in search of miracles. A sub-group are so concerned about making heaven, they destroy the earth. No wonder God kept the location of the Garden of Eden secret.
‘Christian’ means Christ-follower. And Jesus re-fired himself by going up a mountain at intervals. Afterward, He simply speaks and all obey. Speak, not shout. He once went up the mountain with some of His disciples. When they saw how demons were really taken care of, they asked Jesus to allow them stay up there. Selfish demons!
I do not know Islam’s take on demon bursting. I would have to ask my colleague, Ishola Haroon Balogun, but make him talk to me in English, his smooth Arabic frightens me.
Meanwhile, my landlady has cut down a vital source of free Vitamin C – a pawpaw tree – close to my door. The offence? Demons gather on the tree every night. While pawpaw demons caused her sleepless nights of binding and casting, they were bats that informed me of very fat, rich, yellow fruits ready for plucking!
It is just my opinion.

Why You Should Always Cook With Bitter Leaf
Bitter-leaf
can grow
anywhere
unlike
other
leaves
that only
grow in
certain
places and temperature.
These leaves flourishes anywhere they grow. They
add beauty to all places where they are present.
The most distinctive characteristic of this plant is
its bitterness. Every part of this plant is bitter
starting from the leaves to its roots.
The bitterness of this plant is actually good for the
body. It has a lot of health benefits to people. This
plant is very useful in toning the vital organs of the
body especially the liver and the kidney.
The liver is one of the most important organs of the
body. It has a lot of vital functions that is needed for
normal functioning of the whole system of the body.
Without the liver all major process in the body will
be paralyze. The liver is known as the largest organ
inside the body. It has an approximate weight of 1-3
kg in an average adult individual. There are a lot of
major functions that the liver should do every day
and this includes the production of bile acid that
helps in fat metabolism.
Without the liver, fats will not be digested inside the
body to be used as energy. Bitter-leaf can be very
helpful in maintaining the livers optimum health to
release bile acid every time people eat fatty foods.
Another major function of the liver is the production
of glycogen. Glycogen is stored energy that is
release in times of low level of glucose especially
for people who do fasting.
The liver should be well taken care of by using
bitter-leaf. Once the liver is been damage it can’t
be restored into its normal function. People with
liver problems can boil a bitter-leaf and drink a
glass of it every day.
Another very vital organ inside the body is the
kidney. Kidney helps in the excretion of waste
products inside the body. If the normal function of
the kidney breakdown there will great huge problem
inside the body. Bitter-leaf a natural herb that is
useful in taking care of the kidney and the liver.
Diabetic patient can also use bitter-leaf as one of
their medication to prevent high sugar level in the
blood. It will not only lower the sugar level in the
blood but also repair impaired pancreas. As you all
know pancreas is the organ responsible for the
production of insulin for glucose to reach each cell
to use by the body as energy. Impaired pancreas
does not release the right amount of insulin to
maintain the right sugar level in the blood.

Mrs. Otiti Esegba
BY EMMA AMAIZE & AKPOKONA OMAFUAIRE
OLOMU— MRS. Otiti Esegba, a 76 year-old
grandmother, escaped from the den of her
abductors about five hours after she was abducted,
Monday.
She was abducted at 2a.m. by a five-man kidnap
gang at Akperhe community in Olomu kingdom,
Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State
and taken away on a motorcycle to their den at
Oviri Olomu.
Mrs. Esegba is the mother of the Managing Director
of Ben-Segba Technical Services Limited, an oil
servicing firm in Ekpan.
Same day,
a medical
practitioner,
Dr. Richard
Kofi, a
native of
Okpare
community,
also in
Olomu
kingdom
was seized
as he was
entering his
clinic in
Ughelli. He also escaped from his kidnappers.
Prior to the Esegba and Kofi episodes, a lawyer, Mr.
Omonemu, was kidnapped by the gang and kept for
20 days before he regained freedom.
Mrs. Esegba, whose pleas to the kidnappers to free
her fell on deaf ears, said she began to pray that
God should make the two kidnappers guarding her
to fall asleep. She said they actually fell asleep. That
was when she ran.
The other three had left to go and abduct more
victims, saying they needed more money.
She told Vanguard: “At about 2a.m., while I was
asleep, I heard a deafening noise but before I knew
it, two heavily armed men stormed into the house
and seized me after pulling down my door.
“Three others, also armed, joined them and
ransacked the house, took my jewelries, my clothes
and money. They started beating and hitting me
with guns.
“Thereafter, I was dragged onto one of the waiting
motorcycles, popularly known as okada. One sat
behind me and the three others took the other
okada. The one seated behind me held my mouth
and I was blind-folded.”
When she escaped, a fisherman took her in.
She said: “He took me to his home at a place I later
found out to be Oviri-Olomu, after hearing my story.
“At his home I found out that he was married to my
niece. They clothed me as I was almost naked.”
“This man called my people at Akperhe at 6a.m.
They came and alerted Oviri community leadership.
That is my story.”

Teen Charged With Raping Girl, Posting Video To Facebook
fourth
teen was
charged in
the rape
of a 12-
year-old
Chicago
girl that
was
eventually posted on Facebook by her attackers in
May.
Dyquier Garrett, 16, was charged Friday with
aggravated criminal sexual assault and ordered
held on $500,000 bail.
Neither prosecutors nor The Cook County State's
Attorney's office said what led to Garrett's arrest.
Three other teens, Scandale Fritz and Justin
Applewhite, both 16, and Kenneth Brown, 15, were
arrested for the rape in May.
The three are being held on $900,000 bail each.
The assault happened in December of 2012 at
Fritz's home in the city's Englewood neighborhood.
Authorities said the girl had gone to Fritz's home to
talk to him when she was forced into the basement
by Brown, who had a gun.
Prosecutors said the boys raped the girl and filmed
the attack. Prosecutors say Brown is seen in the
video holding a gun as the boys shout gang
slogans.
According to Fox, Fritz was initially ID'd after he
briefly turned the camera on himself.
Footage of the attack was posted on the boys'
Facebook pages just two days later -- part of what
appears to be a troubling and growing trend of
posting sexual assaults to social media.
Fritz later provided a handwritten admission to the
crime. The three initially charged are due back in
court Dec. 11.
